FE 70-200mm GM F2.8 OSS II

    Unprecedented image quality

Image quality is superb throughout the zoom range at all focusing distances. Two aspherical elements, one an XA (extreme aspherical) type, ensure high resolution throughout the image area. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements, and one ED aspherical element minimise chromatic aberration, while Sony’s Nano AR Coating II subdues flare and ghosting. High-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are available.

    Exquisite G Master bokeh

Beautiful G Master bokeh is achieved through advanced optical design, an F2.8 aperture, and a new 11-blade aperture unit. An XA element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision suppresses onion ring bokeh, and the new aperture unit helps to deliver natural circular bokeh. Close-up bokeh is superb too, with a minimum focusing distance of just 0.4 meters (1.32ft) at 70mm and 0.82 meters (2.69ft) at 200mm.

Fast, precise AF supports creative shooting

Four of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust efficiency that boosts AF speed by up to 4x2 compared to the previous model. When tracking an approaching short-distance runner, for example, tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30%3 compared to the previous model, greatly increasing chances of getting the shot.

    Professional movie capability

The latest lens technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift when zooming, and axis shift when zooming. XD Linear Motors and a new aperture drive unit contribute to quiet operation. This lens even has independent control rings for focus, zoom, and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring. Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures responsive, direct manual focus control.

Advantages of Sony’s lenses for video shooting

Learn the four unique advantages of using Sony's E-mount lens for video shooting. The combination of Sony's lenses and cameras will enhance your video creation experience.

    The lightest in its class

This lens offers outstanding optical quality and AF in the world’s lightest F2.8 70-200mm zoom. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 1045 grams (36.9oz); approx. 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves balance, while a constant barrel length further contributes to easy, agile handling.

    Professional control and reliability

Flexible focus control is provided by features such as Full-time DMF, Linear Response MF, and a focus-range limiter. An aperture ring with switchable clicks and an iris lock provides extra exposure control. MODE 1, MODE 2, and MODE 35 optical image stabilisation ensure sharp images, and a dust and moisture resistant design6 plus fluorine-coated front element maximise reliability in tough environments.

The focusing system’s double linear motor takes on the vital role of providing “wobbling” actuation for the AF contrast detection system when shooting video. An optical design that effectively minimizes focus breathing plus quiet mechanical operation further adds to focusing performance that is ideal for movies as well as stills.

    Class-leading close-up performance

    Class-leading close-up performance

Class-leading close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 0.96m and 0.25x maximum magnification is ideal for portraits, telephoto macro, and more. Contributing refinements include ED glass elements and a floating focus mechanism to control aberration that can be problematic in close-up applications.

Fast AF optimized for stills and video

Two heavy focus groups are rapidly and precisely positioned by separate actuators: a powerful RDSSM (Ring Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) actuator for the front group, and a double linear motor actuator for the rear group. Improved positioning precision works with real-time feedback from multiple position sensors to allow the body’s AF system to operate at full capacity.
