Stunning images from a lightweight and compact lens

Sony’s latest lens technology delivers extraordinary resolution and bokeh in a compact, lightweight 50 mm lens. With outstanding image-wide resolution and contrast from F1.4, this fast, responsive lens offers sharp realism for stills and movies that will satisfy users from advanced amateurs to the most discerning professionals.

G Master™ quality right out to the edges

G Master™ quality right out to the edges

Two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively correct distortion and most types of aberration so that high resolution is achieved right out to the image edges. This new optical design also employs an ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element to suppress chromatic aberration so that images are clear and sharp without colour bleeding.

    Unrivalled G Master bokeh

    Unrivalled G Master bokeh

Innovative optics and an F1.4 maximum aperture deliver magnificent bokeh. XA (extreme aspherical) elements prevent onion-ring bokeh, while spherical aberration optimisation during design and manufacture contributes to beautiful bokeh with reduced colour bleeding. An 11-blade circular aperture produces beautiful bokeh at maximum aperture.

Nano AR Coating II for outstanding clarity

Nano AR Coating II for outstanding clarity

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II process produces a thin, uniform coating on lens surfaces, dramatically reducing internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. Excellent contrast and clarity are achieved even when the sun or other strong light sources are within the frame.

Minimum focusing distance is 0.41 meters and maximum magnification is 0.16x when AF is used (0.38 meters and 0.18x for MF), providing extra flexibility for shooting stills and movies. XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements maintain sharpness at any focusing distance, while smooth, deep bokeh at F1.4 separates the subject from the background.

XA lens elements for compact and lightweight

XA lens elements for compact and lightweight

Sony’s most advanced optical technology provides superb resolution in a compact, lightweight lens. XA (extreme aspherical) elements in an innovative design, high-thrust XD linear motors, and a compact circular aperture unit work together in a large-aperture lens that is only 80.6 mm in diameter and 96.0 mm in length while weighing just 516 grams (18.3 oz.) .

Fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking

Fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking

This high-performance lens effectively maximises the speed potential of α series bodies, quickly acquiring focus on subjects even when using shallow depth of field. Sony’s high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and an advanced control algorithm ensure smooth, responsive focus drive for stills and movies.

    Smooth, quiet AF for movies

    Smooth, quiet AF for movies

XD linear motors and an advanced control algorithm optimise response to control signals so that focusing is precise and vibration is minimised for refined, quiet AF operation that can be a huge advantage when shooting movies, even at high frame rates. The breathing compensation function in compatible α series bodies is also supported .

    Intuitive manual focus control

    Intuitive manual focus control

Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation immediately produces a corresponding change in focus, similar to the response of a mechanical focus system. Precise, intuitive control directly translates your creative ideas to impressive imagery.

    Independent aperture ring

    Independent aperture ring

An aperture ring with a click ON/OFF switch offers direct, hands-on aperture control. An iris lock switch can be locked so that the aperture ring is either fixed at the “A" position, or can be manually set from F1.4 to F16. When unlocked the aperture ring can be seamlessly moved between all settings.

Customisable focus hold button and more for advanced control

Customisable focus hold button and more for advanced control

Focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch provide extra shooting versatility. Customisable focus hold buttons in two locations can be assigned other functions from the body menus to match shooting needs. For example, the Focus Magnifier function could be assigned to these buttons so that it is available for quick focus checks while shooting.

    Compatible with 67 mm filters

    Compatible with 67 mm filters

This lens accepts standard 67 mm screw-on filters. Thanks to its internal focus system the front element does not rotate while focusing, facilitating the use of circular polarizing filters for landscape photography or variable ND filters for movies. The FE 24mm F1.4 GM and FE 35mm F1.4 GM lenses are also threaded for 67 mm filters, so filters can be shared.

    Fluorine front element coating

    Fluorine front element coating

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants that do become attached to the lens surface.
